Keeping Current
Fuel for mind and body
Can you ever consume too few calories, or was the lady who said "You can never be too
rich or too thin" all wet? Well, in fact you can be too thin--which is usually the result
of taking in too few calories--for your own good. Your body needs fuel, even in the rest
ing state when it is still at work breathing and keeping the internal machinery humming a
long. Your body, being not very subtle where such matters are concerned, interprets too
few calories as starvation. And our most ancient evolutionary instincts are to lower the
matabolism rate when this happens. And with a lower rate of metabolism, fewer calories
are being burned. So they remain where you last saw them, in spite of all the little you
have been eating. So, contrary to popular belief, to lose weight you really have to consume
enough calories to keep the metablic rate high. Generally speaking, enough is between 1,700
and 2,500 a day.
